The Trilogy of the Fawn, the Fox, and the Faerie

A traversable work of 45 lyrical pieces in which poetry, original painting, music, voice, and moving image meet—each medium opening another door into the same house.

Dense abstract painting in black, red, blue, and yellow, paired with The Mare Night

Seven encounters

Each encounter began with a poem, later brought into relationship with an original painting, music, voice, and moving image. This selection moves from Entry through the three-act core and into Exit. The paintings were made independently, then found their relationships with the poems as the work expanded across music, voice, and movement.

The Mare Night Trotted into my sight Blocking my way Extinguishing light The Mare Night Turned from trot to gallop Its hooves left divots Some were shaped scallop The Mare Night Neighed in a way That startled the senses A steep price to pay The Mare Night Had tone and muscle Such was its strength Winning every tussle The Mare Night Sucked in the air Through its nostrils wide There was none to spare The Mare Night Was wild and free No stall would hold It away from me

When I cry Will you then sigh As we wake upon the morrow Was it a lie I thought, did I That we would bring the farrow Now you say you cannot stay As you leave me with my sorrow Did I not know that you must go I'm broke, with no hope of borrow So I must cry and you must sigh As we listen for the sparrow What promise did lend Or vastly pretend Marked with the broadest arrow I must exclaim As fate took its aim Piercing my deepest marrow There is no balm There is no psalm Even in finest yarrow So I will cry and you will sigh Forever in the morrow

Although Fox is sly One cannot deny A curiosity high When found nearby The Fawn is wise Despite its size Don’t chastise What we harmonize I hear it is a rare Thing to be sure For a fawn, fox, and faerie To on a soul level concur Yes, the faerie is me As the fawn did see And sly fox dismissed So hurriedly Have we just begun? This lovely hum A steady drum With sugared plum For though we are From near and far We share a star With dreams ajar We welcome you With colored hue No further adieu We begin anew Do fly with me— As mythic air carries us all… Into Act Three.

Read the poem: The Mare Night Part II
Just the other day I met the Mare Night It came galloping in It enveloped my sight I felt my chest tighten Its presence did frighten What would happen next Is recorded in this text I steadied myself I gathered my strength I faced the Mare Night I shortened its length The shadow it cast Could no longer last Once I shone light With a determined might There was no more room For its thundering gloom I had clearly defeated The fear that it needed The Mare Night retreated Its purpose unseated So if the Mare Night You ever do meet Hold strong to yourself And it will retreat The Mare Night Cannot hurt you at all Once properly escorted Back to its stall Perhaps that day It missed its hay Once properly fed It will promptly to bed

Read the poem: Hum
So the wind Said to the tree You shall grow no taller Lest you surpass me So the sun Said to the tree You will stay barren Lest you outshine me So the soil Said to the tree You shall limit your intake Lest you drain me So the water Said to the tree You shall drink but a sip To be left empty is not for me So the tree Said to the wind My height is perfect No contract to rescind So the tree Said to the sun Who could outshine you? All your energy is fun So the tree Said to the soil Let me prove my worth See me toil So the tree Said to the water Without height, without leaf My needs list is shorter So Gaya Said to the wind Temper your blow As together you will grow So Gaya Said to the sun Let the tree bloom Weaving your light in its loom So Gaya Said to the soil Let the tree feed It is measured in its need Hearing all That Gaya stated Water increased its flow Tree relaxed, truly satiated This is when All turned silent Save for the hum Of perfect alignment

The story

The work revealed its own architecture.

The Trilogy began in January 2026 with “When I Cry.” As I wrote it, I could hear the poem internally as a song. One musical realization led me back into my poetry collection Tantamount to find other poems that seemed to want music. Several songs began to feel like an album; the album revealed an act; and three distinct acts emerged.

The core three-act Trilogy was completed in February 2026. Across the year, the work expanded around that core through entry, inter-act, and exit thresholds. Paintings I had created independently found relationships with individual pieces. Music introduced voices beyond my own. Still images began to move.

“I built the structure. The audience determines the encounter.”

Kelly Anne Manuel

Kelly Anne Manuel is a poet, author, and intuitive painter who grew up on Long Island, New York, surrounded by books, music, theater, and making. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications from Indiana University and working in the corporate world and preschool education, she came to writing later in adulthood. In 2022, Manuel wrote and hybrid-published 31 children’s books through Balboa Press, rooted in rhyme and language intended to be read aloud, and later produced their audiobook editions. Her adult poetry developed into a larger body of work titled Tantamount. Manuel paints intuitively, beginning without a predetermined image and allowing each work to reveal itself. In 2026, poetry, painting, music, voice, and moving image converged in The Trilogy of the Fawn, the Fox, and the Faerie. She lives and works in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area.
